I don't think I started this discussion on limiting potty passes.
What I did say, was that I had a toilet stool in my classroom that
serves as a planter, that's all.
But, on the subject of limiting the "abuse of potty breaks" I can add
my words. I would like to have my own creative system, but my
school has a system that I'm suppose to follow. Every student is
issued an agenda when they enter the school. It is to be carried
everywhere and with them at all times. In this agenda are places
to keep homework records, messages to and from parents, reward
pages, hall pass pages, school and student expectations, rules, etc.
If they request a pass and I agree, then they fill out the pass and
I initial it. There is a new pass page for each quarter. There are more
pass lines than anyone would ever need. Some students get them filled
up some use 3 to 4 lines in a quarter. But you can see that with some
students they get passes from everybody, others only get them from me.
Some students will never ask certain teachers, some teachers will just not
give passes, no matter what. Our classes are 41 minutes and passing
is only 4 minutes. We are in a very large building and travel time is often
tight. Oh yes, and if they lose or do not carry an agenda then they can not
pee on class time. That's a school wide rule. Students caught in the
hall during class
without an agenda are sent to the office. These agendas serve multiple
purposes and cost the school about $4 each times 500 students. Over the
year we see 200 to 300 students come and go so we need lots more than
the 500 agendas. Replacements cost the student $10 each.
Sorry that was so long, Woody in KC
