hi,
i think it was woody who asked about tried and true ways to limit potty trips; i'd like to know, too. i never dreamed i'd be asking this - my plan up until now has been to tell kids during class orientation that they could use the pass when they needed to as long as their usage didn't become excessive. they have to "check out" with me first. this has worked for me for years. it is not my nature to forbid bathroom breaks or to embarass kids about something they need to do. however, the batch of sixth graders i'm teaching now has to use the bathroom all the time and its making me crazy! it's not just one or two chronic offenders, either. one asks, says they reeeeeeeaaaaaally have to go, does a little dance...then the potty train takes off! it seems like half the class reaally needs to go. i've considered all the obvious stuff - the kids seem to enjoy class, are involved with their work, have not been caught playing in the hall, i have them at the same time of day as always...i have given a talk to the whole class about how the bathroom pass is really for "emergencies", that they need to take care of things before and after class, that i have never had to leave class myself...i have asked them individually why they need to use the pass so often and get shoulder shrugs. i usually snicker at nit picky problems like this (at least they're not calling me a bitch!) but this is really bugging me! any suggestions that aren't mean would be great!
thanks,
wendy
