rightly or wrongly, this is what I hear from students as to why some of us may
have the 'b' tag:
The teacher used sarcasm, or a short answer to a student and embarrassed them.
The teacher changed the rules, said one thing, and then expected another.
The teacher favored one kid in the classroom, in an obvious way.
The teacher pulled the "because I said so" routine.
The "B: word is usually a defense mechanism by an adolescent who feels helpless
or diminished at the moment.
My sister in law will tell you that I am notorious for apologizing to anyone to
whom I felt I have slighted, to such an extent that she laughs at me when I call
to apologize because SHE didn't recognize the slight, but I had....I do the same
with my students. I have been known to pull them out of the class in the hall to
apologize for my "quickness', (as my mouth goes faster than my brain
sometimes)...and my students accept the apology with much surprise. I, too, have
gotten the "b" word I am sure, but try to be more empathetic to their feelings.
