I personally try as a rule to keep hands off, but in almost 30 years there have
probably been a time or two I helped with some background coloring when time was
tight. I find the tracing paper a good idea. I have also had to touch a
painting when explaining blending or brush strokes...didn't have another canvas
at the ready. But an art teacher who doctors kids' work is cheating!

Regarding contests, I literally despise them. First, I feel they are
exploitive. Instead of paying for advertising, someone has the bright idea to
hold a contest. And once you've entered a child's work into the contest they ask
constantly if they won, and it is kind of painful to keep saying no. The one
exception is the "Written and Illustrated By" yearly contest where "winning" is
publication. I feel that is akin to the real world, so I encourage that, along
with advice how how many rejections authors get before actually being published.
