I agree with the name projects. i go a step further. i have students find
the meaning of their name (I got a supply of name baby name books from the
used book store), i have them find out who named them and why, if they had
nicknames what they want to be called. they have to write this into a
paragraph and present it to class along with their project. Students in the
audience have a sheet to write down the student's name and something positive
about this student. After the student is done presenting, the other students
have to give the positive comments. At the conclusion of the presentations I
give a "name" test where I go around the room, put my hands on each student
and and the kids write down the names. You'd be surprised how many high
school kids don't know the name of their classmates. This works well for me,
and since the presentations are very short and positive almost everyone
participates.
