Congratulations, new teacher!
I suggest you immediately "clean the slate" and be very firm about it.
Perhaps even talk to the principal first so that a parade of students to the
principal's office in the first couple of days won't be a surprise.
Shouldn't have much trouble after that.
Also, a good first lesson in any new school involves student names. Names
with warm and cool colors, names in clay relief sculptures, backwards names
in linolium, cut out oak tag letters to spell names for rubbings.
