I had a HS kid tell me last year that he didn't have time to do his
art history report because he had homework in "real" classes that he had
to finish. I told him, and the rest of the class, that the "F" they get
in my class for not doing the work is as real as the "A" they get in the
class where they did all the work. I also reminded them how it would
feel to "ride the bench" (these were athletes) if they got an F in art.
I got all assignments turned in promptly after that!

    Jill,
I agree with this. Don't lose any sleep over it just point out how it can
hurt them and then back away. They will have to learn the hard way. It does
    burn me up though.
