There is an art teacher that routinely and for years has taken her students
art and added her "touches" on the work itself as well as with clever matting
and additional
mountings. She wins many art contests with her students art. Recently I
heard
from some other teachers that they suspect this too. I followed this
teacher (school expected me to perform wonders as she did) and while teaching
perspective realized that the student that had won a first in an important
poster contest with the drawing of a train in perfect perspective did not
know anything about perspective. That was my first clue. Students from past
years are now highschool and have mentioned how much they resented her
"drawing" on their art. I have always had a hands off policy. I will draw
on the board or on a separate piece of paper but never on the childs art. So
what is the concensus out there. What should a teacher do with
a childs art - I've put on plain mats but not altered the painting or made
the matting
a work of art unless it was with the child and they did the work. My
students have won in some contests with their own work (3rd, hms etc. ) and
I am proud of them.
Personally I don';t like children to enter contests - my school expects it of
me because of the precedent already set - the outcome of the contests
sometimes gives a non-winning child a negative message about their art work.
