I couldn't agree more...how CAN you teach if you don't know what they are
thinking, feeling, needing and wanting? My lunch period is really like
another class - but special, I have a room full of kids, from 1st to 5th
grade, all working together, talking, sharing personal stuff with me and
their schoolmates. It's wonderful that they feel comfortab;e here and with
me, to do that. It's great to see all the grades interacting too. I
mostly listen and am always fascinated, and only rarely disgusted...even
then it's usually a funny disgusted! Other teachers think I am insane to
"give up" my lunch and planning periods, but they don't understand that I
don't give up anything, I only gain - insight, inspiration, and opportunity
to make a difference...all by listening. I love it, and I can still do
work if I need to, no problem, the kids are really erspectful and
understand the rules, and clean up beautifully, they know if they fool
around they must leave. I also have kids who come in TO clean...gotta love
'em.
Just some thoughts.
