In response to the question: What do you give students to cut the foam core
    with, for the scrimshaw art.......

I give them sharpened xacto knives, if they are 7th grade or older.......any
younger, and I cut the shapes myself.

To scratch into the foam core, we use quilting straight pins.

I do not think you can use cardboard, because the crayon would absorb onto
the cardboard. The foamcore works, because it is coated with a slick
surface, and the crayon polishes off easily with kleenex, and the black
crayon stays in the etched lines.

Your scrimshaw lesson sounds great. What do you give the students to cut
    the
foam core with? Also do you think this lesson would work with cardboard?
    Thanks, Ruth in IL
