Heather,
Mason stains are powdered pigment. I get them from my local clay
shop. To be honest, I learned this trick from another art teacher I
worked with, who had been a ceramics major in college. We just get the
stains in 1/4 lb or 1/2 lb bags. Mix about 2-3 Tblsp. with 2 cups of
clear glaze, in the blender. You'll have to experiment with amounts,
blues/greens take less, yellows/oranges take more. There aren't any
real reds, just a crimson/pink. Be sure to wear a mask when mixing, as
the powders are really fine. I do this when there are no kids around.
Then just glaze to the temp of the clear glaze (06 in my case, I use
Mayco food safe clear glaze).
