    What a horrible experience you had. It is certainly "educational -abuse" (my
    term) and shows insensitivity to the child.

    My daughter had such a teacher in 1st grade. The emphasis was on reading with
    correct pauses at the commas, and smoothly without stumbling over the words.
    She would hide before school to miss the bus, developed canker sores from
    stress, and I finally demanded a conference. No avail. This teacher's
    attitude was engraved in stone. Shari learned to cope.

    Strangely, she began to love her. And she was a first-class reader in 1st
    grade.
    Still, I can't accept that kind of abuse, regardless of the results.
