Dear Marcia,
I teach painting, I guess in steps. We start with a quick sketch - not
too many details. (we will just paint over them) Depending on the medium, we
work from one end of the value scale to the other. Generally, we would work
from light to dark. This way we can keep the light areas actually light, and
not muddy them up. We put in the dark values and "tweek" as necessary.
I always have students try and "listen" to their paintings. They look at
me funny, but it generally works. Listening helps them see areas that they
need to work more. Hope this helps! :)
