I teach a renaissance method, sketch or transfer cartoon, outline the under painting and do tonal/shades and darks in burnt sienna and or burnt umber, then add colors. The under painting can show or be covered according to taste or need.

Do any of you teach painting in steps? Do you have a definite "formula" such
as 1. sketch 2. block in background 3. Paint darks 4. paint middle values,
etc. I am trying to get my Art II kids to swithch from a controlled landscape
painting assignment to a "free choice subject" painting and am having a hard
time getting them to start. They don't seem to think they can do it. Any
    advice?
P.S. We are using tempera with acrylic medium mixed in, on paper. YUCK.
    Thanks,
