Art on board games

Last year was my first year teaching art (7th-8th) and I boldly tried
quite a few ideas knowing that I didn't have much research backing me
up. One of the things I tried was having the students design their own
board games. The success was proportional to it being a first time
attempt. Now I'd like to develop this idea with more info - history of
games/board games, art of, and the problem solving aspect of developing
rules and objectives for a game. Anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks, Nora Redfern
