I too, have a memorable experience to share. I was always drawing as a kid
making things up or drawing shapes and colors on paper. My 6th grade teacher
was one of the most important influences on my life and I wish I could have
told her so. Her name was Mrs. Harrigan and when we were studying the
animals of south America she asked me to draw each animal and present it to
the class along with my written report. She had observed my drawing and was
trying to encourage me.
I remember working very hard on these colored pencil renderings and shading
and as much attention to detail that I could. When it was done she put it up
on the bulletin board and made a great deal of how wonderful it was and what
a talented artist I was. It was then and there that I thought about art as a
subject that I wanted to do more with and In High School another great
teacher sealed that decision with another pep talk.
Mrs. Harrigan has no idea how important she was to me and my life's work, but
she was a wonderful lady and I will always think of her fondly.
