on the first day with my 6th graders i do a 10 minute assignment after all
the intros and rules. i tell them they may not ask ANY questions and they
have 10 mins to complete a family protrait. i repeat the no questions rule.
i tell them while they work, that they may include ANYone that they consider
family it is totally THEIR intrepretation of "family" and family means many
things to many people.
i grade them (using a rubric of understanding, following directions effort
etc) and pass them back the next day as the basis of a lesson on
understanding my grading system and expectations. they keep them in their
portfolio and use it at the end of the year to see how much they've improved
their drawing skills. and i learn alot about my kids on the first day, their
drawing ability and their home life! my seventh graders first day is the
same assignment using a 10 min self portrait ( we do self portraits later in
the year and compare) 8th grade is the 10 min place you'd rather be than
school. very fun first day.
you mentioned art games. i'm very interested in what you play.
