I was chosen to illustrate the 6th grade cook book cover, for a cook book
that we compiled as a class. That supposedly meant that I was the best
artist in the 6th grade. Which may or may not have been true, but the
teacher knew I could do it at least. Then, I spelled "recipe" wrong on
the cover and no one noticed until it was printed up and collated, etc.
Pretty funny...the poor teacher was SICK about the mistake, but it was
too late to fix. I was pretty sick about it too. For the cover design, I
made the title words out of little illustrated forks and knives and
spoons, with a big chef standing there holding a book with carrots and
celery and chicken drumsticks floating out of it. Maybe they should have
asked someone else!!

I have other art experiences that I treasure, but this is one of the most
One last addition: For my 8th birthday, my mom gave me a box of pastel
chalks and a book about how to draw faeries and elves. That really hooked
me....we never used pastel chalk at school! I was mesmerized by the
chalk, and blurred and blended everything I did. I went through boxes and
boxes of tissues for the blending. I still love to do that!
