When I was in elementary school, we didn't have art. I was frustrated =
because we only got to draw the last hour of the last friday of the =
month if no one had recess taken away for the month. As an adult =
teacher, i now believe the nuns didn't want to be bothered with such =
frivolous activities. School was deadening for those of us who were =
visual. I transferred to public schools and had a real art class for =
the first time. Jack Homan was my teacher in 7th and 9th grade and gave =
me encouragement and an A...a boost I seriously needed. When I =
graduated from college, I invited he and his wife to the ceremony. I =
wrote him and told him how important his influence was on my life. When =
he retired, he called me and shared examples and resources from his =
years of teaching. He is still alive and I still think of him often and =
stay in sporadic touch with him. He made a tremendous difference in =
affirming me as an artist. We have opportunities to teach all the time, =
but the most important role any teacher has is to affirm their students =
and help them develop confidence in their ability to learn and grow and =
appreciate their own uniqueness. Thanks Jack.
