Re:filling in the white spots

Betty,
I think I was the one who started this, so let me better explain. I
tell the K-1's, even 2's sometimes, that there should be "no white paper
showing." I do this so they will USE their space, not to emphasize the
little white spaces between coloring strokes. It is the really anal
kids who take it that far! As I said, I point out in illustrations in
books, art prints, etc that artists use the space effectively.
Basically I am trying to get them beyond the strip of blue at the top,
strip of green at the bottom and a house and tree in between. Or the
ones who use one color of crayon and only draw outlines. I know this is
developmental, but if I say it enough, they begin to at least THINK
about using the space, adding other colors, etc.
By no means do I try to make them have totally solid color. I have my
own artwork hanging around the room (I do abstract watercolor designs,
very psychadelic-looking) and there is negative space there. I say this
to the younger ones to teach them not to make one mark on a page and
decide they don't like it and want to start over. In addition to the
"no white paper showing," I also teach them to create something out of
their mistakes, ala Mona Brookes' techniques. Anyway, I find it works.
I get some great work and the kids do not seem to be creatively
stifled. One thing they do do, however, is learn to come and talk to me
about their work (it starts with wanting an area to be white and they
come over to explain why it is supposed to be white). This is helpful
later, when I ask them to discuss their work with others.

Hope that makes me less of a "bad guy."
