hi all!
big hugs to you guys who gave the all the great leads to my quest for =
"non-euro" mags...maybe "euro" was too vague or an inappropriate =
description...it just really burned me when my may issue of artnews =
declared the century's 25 most influential artists - beuys, bourrgeois, =
brancusi, dali, de kooning, duchamp, judd, kandinsky, le corbusier, =
malevich, man ray, matisse, van der rohe, mondrian, monet... get my =
drift? um, hello, but where is the NON western world? kinda like the =
nightmare of janson's history of art all over again. i didn't mean euro =
as in avant garde - i love stuff that's way, way out there, =
installations and performance art are fantastic!!! maybe its more of an =
attitude? also, as betty mentioned, the writing in a lot of the popular =
mags leaves a lot to be desired. it is often uninspiring, =
unenlightening, and not very philosophical.
at the end of the school year, i give my kids an anonymous evaluation =
form to fill out about our art class. one of the questions is "what is =
one of the most important things you learned in art class this term?" i =
was pleased as tropical punch to get a number of responses like this =
one, "I learned that art is way more than fancy paintings in old musty =
museums." another student said something about learning that the art =
being made today wasn't just a lot of weird stuff that he couldn't =
understand. =20
it strikes me as ironic that a lot of the great magazines i was referred =
to are not art magazines - nat'l geo, smithsonian, and so forth. why =
can't we have an art magazine that more reflects the spirit of =
contemporary art ed, one that talks about diverse art and artists and =
places and people and ideas and materials? for people who really want =
to learn about all of art, not just the hoity toity and hot investment =
type stuff? there are lots of specialty publications but it sure would =
be cool to see it all together. envision an issue with a piece on =
grafitti from cities around the world with artist interviews (maybe a =
how-to, also?) and different countries' official stance and punishment =
for grafitti; an article about the art of pysanky (ukranian egg =
decoration); another featuring the origins and permutations of adinkra =
symbols (from the ivory coast of africa)... can you see it now?
crizmac is great, but its just a drop in the bucket against all the =
faded repros of the "great masters" still out there - thank goodness for =
the internet!
anybody want to publish a magazine? ;D
lol,
wendy
ps did anyone see the simpsons episode a few months ago when homer =
became an outsider artist? it was super! i used it for an activity =
with my kids and one said she was an outsider artist because her work as =
a child was not widely accepted as real art. whew! no kids in artnews, =
for sure (ok, 'cept for nechita)!
