I team teach a high school level humanities class (I do the art, the
other teacher does the history) and we have had as many as 32 kids per
class - but I sure wouldn't recommend it for elementary art. It is nice
to work with another teacher and often times one teaches and the other
monitors behavior and I think our kids get a double benefit by having us
both in the classroom together. I just can't see it being at all a
positive situation in your case. It sounds like your administrator
doesn't recognize much value in art. If possible, I would refuse to do
it - put it in writing (letter to board of education) that it goes
against all the principles of effective instruction, national standards,
etc. Get some parents on your side by informing them of the limited
opportunities that will be available for their children.
If you absolutely have to do it (you're untenured, you want to keep your
job while you are still in your grad program), I'd try to find a way to
alternately share the art room. Don't combine classes and teachers but
while one class uses the art room, the other class uses a regular
classroom or cafeteria or auditorium space. The non-art room class could
get art history lessons, see videos, or do simple drawing type
activities that don't require sinks or special materials. In my opinion
that would be a much better set up for the kids than cramming 50 of them
into one room. Good luck.
