I have taught ab out Frida Kahlo to both 9th graders and 5th graders. First
I read a book about her and her husband Diego Rivera. She painted extemely
autobiographical selfportraits, most about the physical pains she suffered
from an automobile accident. she I spoke about her, showed prints of her
work, editing somewhat for the 5th grades. I tied it in with a self-portrait
lesson. After learning self-portraits in pencil, the students did watercolor
backgrounds telling about themselves. (Important events in their lives,
sports, family, etc.) They enjoyed this project.
