Actually, the painting is called "The Treason of
Images" and there is only ONE inscription under the
painting of a pipe and it is "Ceci n'est pas une

English,it means "This is not a pipe." The painting
is at LACMA. If I may give a professional's opinion
here (Robert Hughes, not mine), the phrase became "a
condensed manifesto about language and the way meaning
is conveyed, or blocked, by symbols." The painting was
in response to Le Corbusier's reproduction of a pipe
as an emblem of plain functional design in "Toward an
Architecture." So, the painting was part of a
dialogue, so to speak and was addressing thinking
processes and "the art world's" sense of illusion.
