painting on glass

Another inquiry - I tried a technique I saw on one of the home shows -
supposedly from the 1800's. You paint on the backside of a pane of glass
with acrylic enamel paints. When dry you then add a backing of foil. The
foil reflects the paint with a shimmery effect. I think I painted too
thickly and didn't get the shimmery effect. Anyone know what this
technique is and have experience/tips?
Thanks,

P.S. Thanks to all that contributed info about money, stamps and flags.
Always worthwhile info!
