money, postage stamps and flags/middle school discipline

Hi -
Forever encouraged to tie in art with other subjects, I'm trying to
figure out a direction and activities that would go along with the study
of art on money, flags and postage stamps - specifically as related to
Texas history. Any ideas on hands-on projects that would go along with
this? (My students are typically frustrated with their abilities to draw
well enough to design their own money.)

Also - just finished my first year of middle school art teaching having
come from 2-3 grade. I know that being better organized will help some
discipline problems and that will come with experience. However, anyone
know of any resources/websites that deal with discipline at this age? I
am becoming hardened and ugly already - my mouth doesn't hang quite so
low in reaction to their actions and words. I had visions (illusions) of
this happy, inspired classroom. Ha!
However, school just ended and I'm still excited and enthused about
finding new ideas and techniques so there is still hope - and there were
1 or 2 students in most classes that were listening and appreciative.

Thanks again,
Nora Redfern
