I have been trouble with my messages bouncing, so I'll try again. About
a year ago--if you go back that far--I was begging for suggestions for
painting a giant time line around the walls of the school. I wanted
ideas for all the verbage--I couldn't quite figure out what I wanted it
to look like. Well, now, 9months later it's all coming together--sort
of--we're only up to 300 A.D. but everyone who sees it gets excited--altho
I'll have to admit, the adults are unanimously excited--the kids often
ask me why we want to do it?? We have 900 feet of space, varying from
4 feet tall to 11 inches. We started at 250,000B.C.-5000B.C. with one
unit, 5000 -2000 as a unit, and then expand for the rest--2,000B.C. to
2000 A.D. at about 2-1/2 inches per year. We have a red line with the
year and then illustrations every now and then--eg. Neanderthals,
Stonehenge, Eygptian wall frieze, Olmec heads, Greek red and black plate,
Qin terracottas, Emperor Constantine etc. We printed all the dates and
words on computer, then made transparencies and use an overhead to trace
the words/picture with a Sharpie, then paint. Even the local newspaper
got into it and put us on the front page. I would recommend it to those
of you who can't put up student work in the hallway for fear of having
it ruined. Of course, they could if they really apply themselves, but
it's not easy since the space is high. I'm thinking of protecting the
murals with Zenolyte(Sp?)Do you have any suggestions for this??
I think there are some types of verathanes or shellacs or something that
you can protect work with that will allow you to clean off tagging if
you work fast. Does anyone know Brands?? Anyway, it's been a really
successful project. I even have a group of students who are meeting
me at school every Tues. all summer!! Sid
