Hello. My name is Linda Inlay and I'm the director of a charter school with
an arts integrated curriculum. I also serve on the National Council of
Teachers of Mathematics Student Services committee. We are looking for ideas
to do a "contest" that is more a mathematical challenge for upper elementary
and middle school students. We had thought of putting together a challenge in
which groups of students selected a community project iwhich requires the use
of math (determining whether an intesection deserves a four-way stop;
landscaping a garden,etc) and found that the National Science Foundation and
the Bayer Foundation was sponsoring its first community service project using
science instead.

So, we're back to the drawing board. Since I am involved in an arts-based
school, I thought that perhaps a mathematical challenge involving the arts
would be unique.

I have a meeting at NCTM hdqtrs on June 18 and would love ideas to take to the
