Imagine a single warm flickering in the darkness, illuminating a screen
where lacy silhouettes begin to dance and flutter. Their graceful
gestures awaken the essence of kingdoms long lost, relating epic tales of
rivalry and conquest, laced with classic human lesson and unrestricted
wit. This is the art of Shadow Play.
Bali & Beyond offers rich traditional stories from the Mahabarata in a
multi-lingual multi-cultural setting. On June 13th, RThe High Priest's ChallengeS tempts the
sons of the Pandawa and Korawa Princes. Bring a cushion and blanket and
come early for a prime spot to enjoy the night!
An oil lamp flickers in the darkness as lacy silhouettes begin to dance
and flutter. Glimmering bronze chimes ring the fanfare as incense swirls
in the air and baskets overflow with blossoms, fruit, and sweets. Guests
warm to the plight of ancient kings, queens, and princes, elegantly
depicted in song and shadow. Intriguing spiritual dilemmas ultimately
erupt into a fiery battle of magically powerful weaponry.
About two hours in length, the audience is traditionally encouraged to
view from behind the screen, the collection of over one hundred shadow
characters, the shadow artist, and Gamelan musicians.
The performance is in modern English, retaining formal ritual elements
and the ancient Hindu language. Translation and humor are provided by
servant characters who make local and topical observations.
Bali & Beyond is a company of Los Angeles performing artists inspired by
the cultures of Indonesia. The ensemble offers original music, theater
and dance, traditional Gamelan music and Indonesian arts presentations.
Bali & Beyond produces concerts, workshops, and residencies for
universities and civic venues; music, visual effects, and consultations
for the feature film and recording industry; and educational programs for
arts organizations, museums, and public schools.
This project is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los
Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, with additional assistance provided
by Occidental College and Bali & Beyond.
