Dear Artsednet Subscribers:

I am writing this letter on behalf of California State Assembly Speaker
pro Tempore Sheila James Kuehl. The Assemblywoman has introduced
Assembly Bill 365 this Session which will require all public high school
students to take a year of visual or performing arts as well as a year of
a foreign language. The arts should be part of the core high school
curriculum, and AB 365 will bring the arts into that distinction by
ensuring that all students will have a year of experience in the arts.
Current law in California requires that students take a year of one or the
other, pitting two very different and uniquely beneficial subject areas
against each other. This bill simply separates the two subjects.

I write to the entire group but would like to particularly address those of
you who live and work in California. If you would like to support AB
365, please write letters to your state Senator asking them to vote for
the bill and telling them why you believe arts education is important to
every single student. Letters from constituents are the most powerful
persuasion we can command. If you would like more information on the
bill or have information/research which could help us in persuading other
Legislators to vote for AB 365, please reply to me as soon as possible.
If you do not know the name of your senator, I will provide his or her
name for you. We are also targeting Governor Pete Wilson since
his Office of Child Development and Education has opposed the bill,
despite the Governor's supposed strong platform supporting the arts,
despite his California Arts Council, and despite the huge arts-related
industries in California and their cry for more education in the arts.

You can send letters to:
Honorable (Insert name of Governor or Senator)
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, California
95814

When you write a letter, please, send a copy of it to me by mail or fax
so that I can forward it to the appropriate people at each stage of our
continuing effort. My phone number is 916-445-4956. The fax number is
916-324-4454. The address is:
Honorable Sheila James Kuehl
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, CA 95814
Attn: Nicole C. King

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR WORK IN THE ARTS. I HOPE THAT EACH OF YOU WILL
SUPPORT AB 365 AND HELP BRING THE ARTS TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN A
MEANINGFUL WAY.

Sincerely,
nicole c. king
