Mel-
Our high school has a humanities course which addresses history through all
of the art forms (limited empahasis on literature). I have taught both Art 1
with some art history and Humanities, and although the time periods mentioned
remained the same, the emphasis was much difference. The Humanities couse
went much more into depth and the focus was on the relationshhips between the
arts and the culture. I would tell your Art 1 students that they are
fortunate to have such great preparation in art -- their prior learning will
make a true understanding of history and the art forms of that time and place
much richer and deeper. I am amazed at how much there is to know about time,
place, cultures and the arts and how much I learn each time I teach a
course!!!! They should be congratulated on remembering what they've learned!
