Our school went to full inclusion several years back... For the majority of the kids, I have seen that it is a much better environment than an isolated special ed class was .... they are learning more "mainstream behaviors".

I must honestly admit I get some students who are so handicapped that they can do nothing... I finally bought some puppets and tactile toys for infants to keep them occupied, if they were capable of holding somthing.

One thing that I did find disturbing.... at the end of each semester we do a written self evaluation of our work to put in the portfolios. It is not an extremely demanding exercise.. and I know from the standardized tests we administer, my questions are similar to what the children are supposedly doing in class. For the most part, I feel it is very useful... but this last week I noticed one class was almost totally nonfunctional. These 5th graders could not write a paragraph describing their artwork, or even start on the higher level thinking questions. This class has a very disruptive student who has downs syndrome. It appears from that experience (and the whole year with them) that the entire class learned the opposite behavior than the goal of inclusion.....

Another issue... we are supposed to treat these students the same as everyone else, yet my principal chided me for not creating special lessons for the severely handicapped students...

One good thing... after several years of my requesting it, an aide does accompany the most severely handicapped children... sometimes.
