RE:[teacherartexchange] choice based art

Date: Sun Jun 13 2010 - 17:51:02 PDT

I'm sorry, I missed the beginning of this thread, I just wanted to mention
a wonderful thing that happened with my students and in regards to choice
based art. Youve probably already taken this into account.

I did a mobile project with my students here in sub-arctic Canadian
school. The student's didnt know what a mobile was, and I wasn't prepared
for that, but we got over that. They didn't really value the mobile while
we were doing it. It is finicky to work with wire and fishing line, but
out of 13 students we got 6-7 completed. The students put their work off
as usual, moaned etc. for some.

However, later in the year we were moving desks and I noticed the kids
moved their mobile with them; to have the mobile over their desk! This
caught my attention and made me smile inside. I moved the mobiles with
students whenever they were moved.

Then, just recently, we were putting papier mache ducks, eagles, geese, up
and I suggested we take down our mobiles.. NOOOO! was the chorus I
received. Wow. So now we have mobiles, and birds, swing over head.. they
love it, but only show it in the most covert ways.

This made my heart swell.
Something happened for them.. (and me).
