Thanks Jayna,

It sounds like you've got a great relationship with your students. That's
what I've been striving for. Some of the students told me that I was too nice,
so I tried to be firmer. Several kids actually told me, "You need to really
scream and curse at us like the other teachers. That's what works." I always
responded, "I shouldn't have to yell or curse. I shouldn't have to go to that
extreme in order to have you show some respect in here." When I did yell or
scream, it might stun them for a moment because it was a rare moment, but I
really don't think it would have been effective at all if I did it all of the
time. I tried talking to many of them one-on-one, and that's when I felt the I was getting to know them, like we had a connection. They
responded to me much better in private, but I still just couldn't get them all to
behave when they were together. I guess it's going to take time and more
experimenting until I find what really works for me.
