[teacherartexchange] funny and cool-Stacie

It is really awesome when you find the balance between
having high standards and excellent classroom
management while being funny and cool at the same
time. For me, the number one thing to remember is to
always have them involved in something. Downtime is a
classroom atmosphere killer. I can honestly say that
the biggest discipline problem I've had is when one of
my middle schoolers says something rude about another
student, or when the class simply gets too loud. The
kids just aren't rude to me because they never feel
like they have to be. If anyone mouths off, we talk it
over one-to-one, and it doesn't happen again. We are
instantly friends, and they think I'm cool for giving
them a chance. Of course, they might goof off and fail
my class, but discipline is no longer an issue. My
philosophy on classroom management is that if you want
respect, give respect. The only rules I have posted in
my room are "No shenanigans, roguery, or mischief
allowed in the art room". I know they think I'm
cheezy, but a lot of times I feel like a celebrity
around here because they really do like me and they
know I like them. (Of course, being hip, young, and
totally hot doesn't hurt- JUST KIDDING!!!) If you
project the image of being approachable but firm,
that's the key. They were so hard on you this past
year because you were fresh meat and they wanted to
see how far they could get. It also helps to be really
excited about the work you give them and set your
expectations high. If they know that you know that the
project you came up with is LAME then they will give
you LAME results. (All this advice comes from
experience- trust me) I know you will decide what your
heart tells you to do, but I believe in challenging
myself once in a while, so I say go for the middle
school position.
