NYC vacation

My daughter-in-law and I want to go to NYC next month to visit Metropolitan
Museum of Art and maybe some other things...maybe a play...I've never been
to one.

Can someone recommend an inexpensive, decent hotel nearby...

And what are some other things I shouldn't miss while there...
