Dear Art Educators,

Crizmac video - "The Village of Textiles: Teotitlan
del Valle" would be an asset to your video collection.
I will be adding Zapotec resources to the weaving
lesson on Incredible Art Department.
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/middle/middle8.html

One site with symbolism of Zapotec weaving is no
longer on line. Some of the symbols/designs come from
Navajo culture and other cultures (including Adinkra
stamp designs).

The 20 minute video comes with teacher's guide
complete with National Standards and objectives. It
would be so easy to make a student handout from the
guide. Video questions and activities included.

Here is a review that appeared in Arts and Activities:
"This colorful video features the Vasquez family who
lives in a village near Oaxaca, Mexico, as they
demonstrate the art of using wool--from dyeing it with
natural materials (various plants and insect larvae),
carding, spinning it on a wheel (introduced to Mexico
by the Spanish) and weaving. The village itself is
located in the hills of the Sierra Madre Mountains,
with most of the local families involved in the
production and sale of these wool rugs called
"tapetes." The designs are based on ancient
archaeological sites, images found in Zapotec
mythology, and traditional as well as modern motifs.
The Teacher's Guide contains learning objectives,
vocabulary, discussion questions, ideas for making
art, and content standards as addressed by the
National Visual Arts Standards" Review by Barbara
Herberholz
