Looking for meaningful 3-D projects for my 2nd and 3rd graders.

I have enough clay ideas for my youngest kids, but I'm looking for some
open ended and creative 3-d units for 2nd and 3rd grade in media other
than clay. I have some of those paper cones that they use for skeins of
thread. I was thinking of a papier mache figure using those or plastic
bottles as a base. There are so many 3-D projects that are step by
step, everyone makes the same thing. I don't want those. I am after
units where each child's art looks personalized and creative. I have
wood scraps ordered too. I ordered them for my 5th graders to use to
build Oaxacan Animals with. But I suspect I will have leftovers, and
I'd rather use them up than put them back in the storeroom. The
youngest kids are sometimes the hardest to plan for. Not third
grade...they can do anything. But 2nd and below are challenging to me
for 3'D without being cutesy. Help me!
