ordering new kiln -- single or three phase?

I am ordering a new kiln and have selected the Skutt 1218-3 with the
automatic controller. What is the difference between the single phase and the three
phase kilns? Also, has anyone had any trouble with this kiln or controller? I
am replacing a older, smaller Skutt 818 that has crumbling walls and several
hanging coils.
