Safe paint for metal

A friend of mine has been asked by his principal to paint the metal post out
in front of the school doors. The paint has to be safe for kids and yet stand
up in the outdoor Chicago winters. Does any one have suggestions? Would there
be something he could put around the post and do that way? I'm couting on you
