I have done molas with 6th graders. We discussed animal and insect symbols
and why they are important to various cultures. Spiders would work well
here. I used brightly colored yarn glued in a linear fashion to a cardboard
pattern -to replace the heavy fabric(s) normally used. This project was very
successful and the outcomes were beautiful. Each template was to be divided
into at least 5 different shapes that identified the insect or animal. A
color was then placed within the shape to hide all parts of the cardboard.
This took a full week (approx. 5 hours) from start to finish (not including
the hundred "shuttles" I wound in preparation for this project) -but the
results were awesome.
