Re: Grading the sketchbboks - for Janet

Date: Tue Jun 18 2002 - 19:36:31 PDT

It's a k-12 show organized by a local art association. I send pieces from
k-5. The show at the elementary level is judged in a way that every child
recieves a ribbon. Of the 63 entries i sent this year, only 5 recieved just
an entrant ribbon. By grade level, I could have 3 first place, 4 second
place, 3 third place and maybe 1-2 Honorable Mentions. I only choose pieces
created by strong, confident artists and explain about the judging. I've
only done it two years and haven't have any problems so far and the children
are so proud to be chosen to take part..I choose work done at school, but
also give the option for students to enter pieces done on their own. It's
the onlyl juried show I enter.
The school and district I teach in is a highly competitive one. Parents push
their students to do their best and I try to offer my students a chance to
enter as many contests and shows as possible that would challenge their
ability. Janet
