Re: school discipline: inspiration from Maggie

Hi, I agreed with everything Maggie said about being in charge of your own classroom and I'm inspired to read Harry Wong's First Days of School. Thanks for that recommendation.

Another source I find useful every year is The Responsive Classroom: Teaching Children to Care by Ruth Charney.

I appreciate this end-of-year reflection on discipline/ behavior issues. It helps me think of how I will set up my room next year. I walked into a position at a high school on April 29th and can't wait to make this MY art room; MY standards, etc. I've got to say that the kids here have been extremely generous and open to me -- not at all what I expected coming in as the 3rd teacher this year and at such a late date.

I did have to deal with issues of motivation, however (or lack thereof!) and I can't say I blame the kids after having a sub for more than two months. They really missed the art teacher they started with and walked all over the sub.

I love being part of this group. Thanks to everyone for being a continuous source of inspiration and support.
