I know that the material we have from the school district who uses this point
system lists 24 specific offenses--from chewing gum to disrespect to lack of
cooperation in groups to defacing the student handbook. The teachers from
our school who attended the conference where this system was presented are
really sold on it...but the thing that supposedly makes it work is the
quarterly field trip. (I found it odd that the kids have to PAY for a
portion of the trip--is missing a day of school really that wonderful?)
Anyway, we shall see what happens. I know that the majority of our faculty
is eager to implement it.
There is also the use of study tables and intramurals at lunch, but we
decided not to work on that the first year. Unfortunately, one of our
biggest problems is students not doing homework or homework of high quality,
so it looks like that problem might continue to exist.
