Texas is difinitely behind in promoting the arts, even with the support I've
seen lately. However, Plano is very much for the arts and we've made great
strides in getting more visual arts in the schools. There is a full time art
specialist in every elementary school, (last numbered 35 schools) 1-2
teachers in each middle school and 3-4 at the high school level. Many of our
high school students recieved scholarships for the arts and at the DMA
sponsored art competition each year, at least half of the winners come from
Plano.
I could wish for more money, but I can make do with what I get. My parents
are very generous as is my PTA. I know many districts in Texas have little
or no art education available. We just need to keep pushing. Janet
