Re: Student teacher

Date: Sat Jun 01 2002 - 22:48:27 PDT

I'm not sure if I've read all the comments about student teachers yet but
this is how I feel. Let's take myself as an example. I was successful in
the business world..switched to teaching five years ago after being home with
children...typical story. I've been teaching five years and have a
reputation as being a top teacher. However, I recall how nervous I was
standing in front of classroom, standing with index cards in front of me
when I student tauht. It was pityful. My experience of my master's art ed
program is that they taught nothing practical that would help me teach. I
knew nothing of the elements and principals of design. I knew them
independently of my education classes from fine art. What I'm basicly saying
is that the university art education departments are at fault and not the
teachers who are coming to us as student teachers. They're not prepared. I
am thankful for the patient, kind teachers who gave me confidence when I
student taught. Not until your first year of teaching when you have a
classroom to yourself do you really know what teaching is all about. For me
it was such a joy to teach once I knew what I was doing. (I do think that
once in a while we come across someone who should not be teaching and should
realize that after student teaching).
