For my art 1 class I use a few painting ideas. This one is a composition
with different contour studies of parts of a bicycle. I bring in a few bikes
and talk about the use of a contour study and have them get close and try to
draw parts of the bike real big on 12"x18" newsprint. Do at least three.

With a format of 11"x 14" tracing paper they combine 2 to 3 drawings
overlapping parts and trying to create an area of emphasis. They don't have
to use all of the drawings and they should be able to move it around to get a
fun design. The composition is transferred to chip board with carbon paper
and a value scale is presented. With black and white paint create a tonal
scale of nine values including white and black. Number them 1-9 with 1 being
white, 9 being black.

Start at one end of the composition and use the number 1 to control the white
areas of the painting. Next do the same with the #9 (black) so that it
creates a directional movement through the composition. Numbers 2 and 3 go
along with the white areas and the numbers 7 and 8 go along the direction of
the black areas. When finished the composition is painted by matching the
colors used in the value scale and they match to original vlaue scale they
started from each day, and the results are interesting.

Another way to organize the painting would be to start with the number 1
(white) in the center of interest and radially arrange the numbers to go away
from this area getting darker as they work out to the corners of the format.

Another variation is to include a circle or square in the painting where you
will do a monochromatic scheme inside the shape to set it off from the others.

I teach this in conjunction with a color chart on value with the color wheel
and it works pretty well in giving them a good composition and use of the
value scale in painting. These are painted hard edged.
