painting collages

if by "painting collages" you mean having them cut pictures from a mag., make a collage from them, then paint the result, then one idea is to have them create the collage based on a particular color, grid the collage off, then redraw it larger and paint. It works well for older students if you tie it in to surrealist landscapes, and have them start the collage on a paper on which they have drawn a horizon line as a point of reference. You could emphasize foreground-middle ground-background, and definitely discuss how to cut items out "around their edge" - surprising how many secondary level students will cut out magazine pictures "higgledy-pigglety"!
