    MJ,
I remember the Palms as being not far from Olde Town (I may be remembering
this incorrectly however) but it is well known and you'll be able to get
directions easily-it's not off the beaten path! I absolutely loved my time
there (3 weeks) and dream of it as a retirement destination....while there, I
also went to Acoma (a bit of a drive out of Albuquerque)-what a wonderful
pueblo! I bought a couple of pots there (up on the plateau-as opposed to down
below at the visitors center)....was also able to attend a pueblo feast day
celebration-which, if you are able-attend!!!!! These are the celebrations on
the feast day the pueblo is named for-the (entire?) nation from the pueblo
gathers and there is day long dancing (the apparel is awesome) and crafts,
food, etc....quite a terrific cultural experience! You should be able to locate
a list of the feast days through out the time you're there and see how
"do-able" going to one will be.
In Albuquerque, there is a restaurant on Center Street (Route 66) called
the Frounteer-they have a great green chili burrito which was $1. at the time I
was there 6 yrs ago, good cinnamon rolls (they might be known for these? I
can't quite recall...), a decent glass of OJ-it was where I had breakfast more
then once. Take the tram up to the top of the Sandias mountains just before
sunset and see a great site-as well as eat dinner at the top (somewhat costly,
    but very neat!).
Petroglyph National Monument is to the west of the city and is a great
hike-awesome!!!!! When I was there, the Republican politicians were considering
cutting a road through the fields to provide easier access to the subdivisions
which were expanding out that way (BOO!-I hope that never did happen!)
Center Street (or it might be Avenue) runs, I believe east and west and
divides the city. I recall the further out (east) we traveled on Center, the
cheesier it got and the taxi driver did tell us to be careful on Center after
dark-not so much in the Univ area, due to the amt of people around. I always
make it a point to ask the taxi drivers about where to be careful and so on. He
also had mentioned the Palms, but a coworker whose folks lived out there had
already given me that lowdown! :-)
On the weekends, there is a flea market out at the fairgrounds (east on
Center) and you'll find some good stuff there-I bought a chili ristra for $4.
-they were more costly everywhere else-and are out of sight if one can find
    them around Wisconsin!
In Santa Fe-the Coyote Cafe is costly, but sorta a thing to do! The museums
there are phenominal-but I imagine that's part of your course-there are weekend
markets in Santa Fe that are supposed to be awesome-and I can tell you, the
townies in Albuquerque passed on attending them, due to what they perceived as
parking hassles-so although it may be crowded, if you're there during one-how
great for you-another great cultural experience! We also did 10,000 waves (a
massage spa)-but that was costly-there are so many artist's tucked up the
canyon roads-I'm sure some of this info would be part of your course sharing,
as well. I was in Santa Fe and Taos for less time-I had far more time to
explore Albuquerque and so that's my fav, I guess....
Gosh, this is making me want to hop a plane-I'm so excited for y'all! I
hope I've whet your appetite and that this is of some use for you! Enjoy! Let
me know how everything went when you return! If any other questions occur to
    you, drop me a line.
Judy P.S. If you buy alot of stuff (I always buy books, pots etc) consider
shipping some home (from Mailboxes, Etc.) to cut down on hauling it around.
