I do not give out pencils in class. They are all responsible for bringing
one everyday. If a kid forgets, I send them down the hall to the pencil
machine to buy one- if they don't have money then I put their name on this
florescent yellow posterboard with a huge "NO PENCIL" at the top and hang it
on my board. (then i give them a golf pencil) If their name goes up twice
then I write them up for not being prepared for class which is a big no no
in my school. It helped, the kids are embarrassed to see their name on the
board and it hangs up there all year! Maybe this will be a solution for
    some of you:)

ps... the golf pencils work great! they hate to work with them and
majically, they start bringing their own to class.
